Almost
Annual Matt Armbruster Memorial Big Wheel Rally to Benefit Saint
Joseph Hospital Foundation, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Q: What?! A
fee to enter the Big Wheel Rally?! Captain, are you
a corporate sell-out?
A: No, bozo. We're helping kids out.
Each year, we gather a bunch of fun people on Pearl Street Mall
and ride plastic Big Wheels from pub to pub to pub announcing our
arrival with power slides and spin outs. Every year since 1991,
I've hosted the Big Wheel Rally on my own just as a free, super-fun
event for everyone to enjoy. But I always felt that it should be
for something.
In
2005
my best friend and his pregnant wife checked into Saint Joseph
Hospital for
her odd symptoms. After day of observation, she got really sick.
A
burst appendix and immediate surgery to clean out the massive
infection started her contractions and led to an emergency c-section.
Daughter
Maya was born 3 months premature at only 2 pounds. She spent
the next three months under the diligent care of Saint Joseph Hospital
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staff with mom and dad visiting
twice
a day, every day. She finally came home in March, a beautiful
pudgy baby, healthy in every regard.
After that, it only took an instant for me to realize what the
Big Wheel Rally should be for. With just a few phone calls and
excited meetings, we are proud to announce that this year's Big
Wheel Rally will be a benefit for the Saint
Joseph Hospital Foundation,
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit fund. All proceeds from the Big Wheel
Rally will go directly to help fund the annual Reunion Picnic for
all the children and families that have been through the NICU.

The Saint Joseph
Hospital Foundation has been assisting Saint Joseph Hospital
for 28 years to achieve its mission of fostering health and healing
for the community, especially the underserved. The purpose of
the Foundation is to raise and manage funds for the Hospital.
Funds originate from Foundation sponsored events and from individual,
corporate and charitable foundation donations. The Foundation
raises money for charity care and general indigent care programs,
capital projects and nursing education at Exempla Saint Joseph
Hospital.
Proceeds from
the Almost-Annual Matt Armbruster Memorial Big Wheel Rally will
be donated to the Saint Joseph Hospital
Foundation in
support
of
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Fund. This restricted fund
of the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation supports capital needs,
continuing education for NICU staff and any special needs for the
babies or families of the NICU. The Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital
NICU is a Level III intensive and intermediate care unit, treating
all newborns who are born prematurely or who have illnesses or
conditions that require a high level of care. These special infants
are cared for by Neonatolgists and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners,
specialists in the field of newborn care.
The Foundation
is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization allowing contribution's
to be deducted from donor's taxable income. In addition, contributions
are donor designated with no percentage for administrative or overhead
costs.
